Offensive Physical Remarks on Comedy Shows Degrade Women

We all know that television is a kind of entertainment. It gives pleasure to the people who are bored and fills the time of those who have nothing better to do. Many people, men, women, children, adults, boys, or girls in many places from many different occupations like it for it is the easiest and the cheapest entertainment they can get whenever they want. Also, TV provides various kinds of program to be chosen. News, encyclopedia, entertainment, sport, music, and comedy show are the examples of those. When somebody has got tired and stressful of dealing with his or her job in the office and they want to relief it, it is simple, they just need to sit in front of their TV set and turn it on to watch the comedy show program offered by the TV station for instance, to refresh their mind without spending much more money. From this fact, we can see that TV has a close correlation with the audiences especially on how it can affect them in both their viewpoint and the way of thinking. Unfortunately, when comedy show as one of the most favorite programs in TV undergoes a change from its real nature, it can be very harmful for the audience to watch this kind of TV program. Offensive physical remarks to the women delivered by the host of comedy shows for example, might be terribly bad for them that they will eventually be looked even more down and down by the society in the end of the day.
In our country Indonesia, the issue of the gender equality has actually been promoted from the very first beginning by Raden Ajeng Kartini, one of Indonesian feminist who fights for women’s emancipation, since 1904. Through this movement, women should have an equal position the same as men either politically or socially and so forth. That is why; they deserve to be treated and respected as good as men. This condition should actually take place on female celebrities as well. They should be treated the same as the male celebrities. But it turns out, what happens in the status quo is not like that at all. Even sometimes, many of female celebrities often get bad treatments just because they are women.
When we talk about comedy shows, we will easily know, those programs are created for entertainment purposes. But then, what happens in the reality is not like that. Even nowadays, the natures of comedy shows which are actually giving jokes without harming have been changed from where they are supposed to be. In many of Indonesian comedy show programs like: Bukan Empat Mata, Comedy Project, Tawa Sutra, Opera Van Java, Pesbukers, and so on, the hosts of those comedy shows often deliver offensive physical remarks toward women to make jokes. Pretty Asmara’s very huge body, Omas’ big mouth, Vega and Rina’s flat nose are the examples. Many hosts use those “uncommon” physical appearances simply because they want to create something funny. And unfortunately, the audiences are also stigmatized then assume that those are funny indeed. They probably do not realize that these expressions might objectify woman as an inferior person. Why is it so? It is because undeniably, up to this day, women are still being underestimated by the society. Many of them still assume that women are inferior to men. Keeping the existence of these offensive physical remarks will only jeopardize the condition on how the society is going to look even more down to the women. Later, they will think that it is just okay to make jokes using women’s physical appearances since it is funny, and furthermore, they will believe that women deserve to be treated like that.
In conclusion, the facts show that giving offensive physical remarks will only degrade women. Some questions come up: What does the matter actually if Pretty Asmara has very huge body? Or, what is wrong with Omas’s big mouth and Rina’s flat nose? Everybody is special and so is a woman. They are beautiful in their own way no matter how they look like. As an educated person, we should appreciate and give respect to it. And that is why, every expression that objectifies woman as an inferior person especially in comedy shows is supposed to be banned.
